Yahoo and Sieman Is Joining the VoIP Scene

Siemens Home and Office Communication Devices LLC said Wednesday that it plans to include Yahoo Inc.'s Internet telephony service with Gigaset cordless phones, enabling free PC-to-PC calls.

The agreement has Siemens Home, a wholly owned subsidiary of Siemens Communications Inc., incorporating Yahoo Messenger and Voice in the Gigaset M34 USB adapter, which plugs into a computer's USB port and enables the voice over Internet protocol capabilities. Messenger is Yahoo's instant messaging service.

The adapter will enable free PC-to-PC calls, as well as calls to landline phones and cellular phones, which carry a charge. In addition, users can access their Messenger contact list.

The Gigaset adapter is scheduled to ship in the third quarter.

VoIP support is increasing among phone manufacturers, particularly cellular phones. Besides Yahoo, rival Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp.'s MSN also offer Internet telephony services.
